CBD Gummies vs CBD Oil (vs Capsules): Which Should You Choose?

Last updated: October 2026

CBD oil and CBD gummies contain the same ingredient, so why do people swear by one or the other? The difference comes down to how you take them, how flexible the amount is, the taste, the cost and how they fit into your day. This guide compares CBD gummies and CBD oil (and capsules, the third option) side by side, so you can pick the format that suits you best.

CBD oil: the most flexible option

CBD oil is the classic way to take CBD. You place a few drops under your tongue, hold them for about a minute, then swallow. The big advantage is flexibility: you can change your amount one drop at a time, which makes oil the easiest way to find what suits you.

Good points:

  • Easy to adjust in small steps.
  • Usually the best value per mg, especially at higher strengths.
  • Simple ingredients: hemp extract and a carrier oil.
  • Comes in several strengths (see our CBD oil strength guide).

Downsides:

  • The earthy taste isn’t for everyone.
  • Counting drops takes a little attention.
  • Less discreet at a desk or on a train.

Our oils come in 10%, 20% and 30% strengths.

CBD gummies: a set amount with a fruity taste

Gummies take the measuring out of CBD. Each one contains a fixed amount (ours are 15mg) and tastes like a fruit sweet rather than hemp. Most people take one or two a day.

Good points:

  • No measuring and no hemp taste.
  • Easy to take anywhere.
  • Easy to keep track of: one gummy is one serving.

Downsides:

  • Less flexible: you adjust in 15mg steps.
  • Usually a little more expensive per mg than oil.
  • Ours contain gelatine, so they’re not vegan.
  • They look like sweets: keep them well away from children.

CBD capsules: no taste at all

Capsules are the simplest of all: one soft-gel with water, like a daily vitamin. Ours hold 25mg each, 30 to a pack.

Good points: no taste, no measuring, a very easy routine. Downsides: the least flexible format and usually the highest cost per mg.

Is one format “more effective”?

We don’t make claims about effects. What we can say is that the formats differ in how you take them and how the CBD is delivered. Oil held under the tongue is sometimes preferred by people who like to adjust their routine finely; gummies and capsules are swallowed and pass through the digestive system like any food. Everyone is different, and the “best” format is usually the one you’ll actually take consistently.

Cost comparison

Product Price Total CBD Cost per mg
10% CBD oil €59.95 1,000mg about 6.0c
20% CBD oil €100 2,000mg 5.0c
30% CBD oil €139.95 3,000mg about 4.7c
CBD gummies (60 x 15mg) €59.95 900mg about 6.7c
CBD capsules (30 x 25mg) €59.95 750mg about 8.0c

Which should you choose?

There is no wrong answer here. The best choice is simply the format you will enjoy taking every day, because a consistent routine matters far more than the format itself.

  • You want flexibility and value: CBD oil.
  • You dislike the taste of hemp but enjoy something sweet: gummies.
  • You want the simplest possible routine with no taste: capsules.
  • You’re not sure: start with a 10% oil to find your amount, then switch to gummies or capsules if a set amount suits you better.

Plenty of people use more than one: oil at home and gummies in a bag for busy days, for example. If you combine formats, add up your total daily amount in mg.

Tips whichever you choose

  1. Take it at the same time each day.
  2. Start low and adjust slowly.
  3. Check the independent lab report (see how to read a CBD lab report).
  4. Store it somewhere cool and dark.
  5. Check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take medication.

What’s in a CBD gummy?

A CBD gummy is a fruit sweet with a measured amount of CBD in each piece. Ours contain 15mg of CBD per gummy, 60 gummies per tub (900mg in total), in strawberry, cherry, kiwi and pineapple flavours. Like most gummies, they contain gelatine and sugars, so they aren’t vegan. Always check the full ingredient list on the tub if you have allergies or dietary requirements.

What’s in a CBD oil?

A simple CBD oil has two ingredients: hemp extract (which contains the CBD) and a carrier oil such as hemp seed oil. That simplicity is one reason many people prefer oil. It also means the oil tastes of hemp: earthy and slightly grassy. If you dislike the taste, holding the drops under your tongue and following with a sip of water helps, or switch to gummies or capsules.

How to store gummies and oil

  • Gummies: keep the lid tightly closed, somewhere cool and dry. In a warm room they can soften and stick together.
  • Oil: keep it somewhere cool and dark. Stronger oils can crystallise in the cold; warm the bottle gently in warm water and it clears.
  • Both: keep them out of reach of children, especially gummies, which look like sweets.

Travelling with CBD

Gummies and capsules travel more easily than a dropper bottle, and they don’t count towards your liquids allowance at the airport. Rules on CBD differ between countries, so check the rules of your destination before you pack, and keep products in their original labelled containers.

Common mistakes

  • Taking several gummies at once “to feel something”. Start with one a day and give it a couple of weeks.
  • Forgetting to count mg across formats. If you use oil and gummies, add them together.
  • Buying gummies without a lab report. Gummies should be tested just like oils.
  • Leaving gummies where children can reach them.

Switching from oil to gummies (or back)

Work in mg, not servings. If you take 6 drops of our 10% oil (30mg), the same amount is two 15mg gummies. If you take one 25mg capsule, that’s 5 drops of the 10% oil or about 2½ drops of the 20%. Make the switch on a day when your routine is predictable, and keep the same time of day.

Which lasts longer?

At a typical amount, a 10ml bottle of 10% oil (5 drops a day) lasts about six weeks, a tub of 60 gummies at one a day lasts two months, and a pack of 30 capsules lasts a month. If you take a higher amount, a stronger oil will usually last longest for the money.

Who makes ours?

All our CBD oils, gummies and capsules are made by Dr. Hemp Me, the Irish CBD company founded in Dublin in 2018, and independently lab tested. CBD Éire is run by the same team. Order before 2pm on a working day for next-day delivery anywhere in Ireland, with free delivery over €50 and a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Are gummies and oils tested the same way?

They should be. Every format should come with an independent lab report showing the CBD content, a THC “not detected” result and tests for contaminants. The units differ: a gummy report usually shows mg of CBD per gummy, while an oil report shows a percentage or mg per gram. Whichever you choose, check that the report matches the label and the batch on your product. Our guide on how to read a CBD lab report walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions

Are CBD gummies better than CBD oil?

Neither is better overall. Oil is more flexible and better value; gummies are tastier and simpler to take.

How many CBD gummies equal a dropper of oil?

It depends on the oil. One of our 15mg gummies equals 3 drops of our 10% oil or roughly 1 drop of our 30% oil.

Do CBD gummies taste of hemp?

Ours are fruit-flavoured: strawberry, cherry, kiwi and pineapple.

Are CBD gummies vegan?

Ours contain gelatine, so they aren’t vegan. Our CBD oils contain hemp extract and hemp seed oil.

Can I take CBD oil and gummies together?

Yes, as long as you keep track of your total daily amount in mg.

Which is the cheapest way to take CBD?

Higher-strength oils usually work out cheapest per mg.

Are your gummies and oils THC-free?

Yes. Every batch is independently lab tested.
