CBD and workplace drug tests

This is a real concern for people who work in transport, construction, healthcare, the Defence Forces or any job with drug testing. Here’s the honest picture:

Reading a CBD label quickly

Five things to look for on any bottle: the total CBD in mg; the bottle size (a 10ml bottle holds about 200 drops, so divide the mg by 200 for mg per drop); a short ingredient list (ideally hemp extract and a carrier oil); the batch number and best-before date; and the name and contact details of the company responsible.

Mistakes to avoid

Mixing up hemp seed oil and CBD oil. Hemp seed oil contains little or no CBD.
Starting on the strongest oil. A 10% oil makes it easier to find your amount.
Swallowing drops immediately. Hold them under your tongue for about a minute first.
Buying without a lab report. It’s the only proof of what’s in the bottle.
Forgetting about medication. Check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any.

How to take CBD oil

Shake the bottle well.
Place the drops under your tongue and hold them for 60 to 90 seconds.
Swallow, and take it at the same time each day.
Start with a few drops of a 10% oil and add a drop every few days if you’d like more.
Keep a short note for the first two weeks, so you can settle on your routine.

How long will it last?
